Restoration Workshop (continued)

It is already November. How time flies!
I should finish the topic about restoration class I took in this fall.

So, after I applied rabbit skin glue, I left it overnight to dry.
Then prepare the mixture of gesso; This is not acrylic gesso widely used in modern painting.
This is the mixture of powdered gesso bologna dissolved in rabbit skin glue.
Keep it for 40-60 C in double boiler before use.

Now it is ready to apply the gesso to the crack.
Carefully paint it with fine sable brush. The crack should be FILLED UP up with the gesso so that the surface of the crack can make a small bank. (However, do not put too much gesso; It will cause a later trouble to scrape.) Leave it to dry.

Then I scrape the gesso-filled surface with a special knife.
This is a surgical knife called "Bistoury". Similar knifes available at craft shop.

Carefully scrape off the excess gesso. The gesso area should be flat.

You can also add brush touches by making scratching the surface with the knife.

Use flashlight from the side to check the surface.

When the cracked area seems to the same level as the non-cracked area, it is ready to paint with oil paints & brush. (You may need to paint some layers to reach the same color as the original state of the painting.)

Finish!

Restoration Workshop

Autumn has suddenly come and I started to take a restoration workshop; I found a crack in a painting that I finished just three years ago. Gee...
But my optimism took it a good opportunity to learn restoration/conservation skills which I have been interested in for a long time.

Although knowing that the restoration is not easy to learn and its skill is of the professionals which needs substantial time and effort, I decided to acquire the skill for my own sake at least to the degree to be able to fix minor problems which may happen within several years after finishing painting; I thought it is one of the painter's responsibilities.

There are just a few such workshops in Japan, but luckily, I found a very good one run by a professional restorer just 30 min. from my house.

In this class, rabbit skin glue is used for fixing the crack and strengthen the canvas around it.

Continued....(maybe)

Beautiful day with brisk of breeze.
First touch of autumn? I hope so, but I know it is still far to go.
Just a short break after the heavy rain last night.

Recent Paintings

Just finished two paintings.
I am really pleased with this polka-dot-like style (which I call "drop " series) , although it takes long time and effort to create one.

Organising Prints

Picked up bunch of  my prints from old studio run by my friend while in Osaka.
These are color etchings I created in my 30's; I was worried that they were yellowing or damaged in some way because they were stored for a long time, but surprisingly, they were in perfect condition ! No yellowing, No molds! I assume that it is thanks to the quality of paper I used for printing: BFK Rives!

Sent all of those to my home at Yokohama, then started to reorganize them scattered all over the studio. It was a substantial amount of work; Start with sorting out by images, count them (the number of edition, artist proof and other proofs such as color trial proof), check which ones were sold to whom, which ones remain at my hand or which ones to be sent to gallery, input all the information to my PC, and then finally repackage them carefully with blown paper after wrapped with non acid paper.
Took me for three days!

A Busy Month

It has been a month since my last post.
It is not a excuse but I was too busy to write a diary;

In April, I went to three exhibitions held in Tokyo area, which include:

- Raffaello (The National Museum of Western Art)   ---TOO MANY PEOPLE! could not look at any painting without looking at someone's head in front of you. I wonder it is truly worth for 1,500 yen... The collections of the museum were much better.

- VOCA (Ueno Royal Museum)--- Curated show of young (under 40?) Japanese artists who are nominated by some reputed galleries. Good works as always, but seems getting the same every year.

- Shunyo 90th Anniversary(National Art Center, Tokyo)---My friends paintings are showcased. Some are wonderful, and some are OK.

Then, I had a reunion of my elementary school class in Osaka (my hometown) and stayed there for a few days to do some errands related to my art.

After I came back, Golden Week Holidays which includes 4 Japanese national holidays started and it kept my husband at home for as long as 10(!) days.
We  took drive, went shopping, two movies, one musical, picnic, eating out many.

Spent too much time outside of my studio.
Let's go back to work!

Spring has come!

Yes, Spring has finally come to my studio.
It was a long winter for those who cannot stand cold like me...
Althogh it is also hay fever season, I feel very refreshing every morning I see cherry blossoms from studio windows.

view from studio: cherry trees in full bloom

I started a new painting. Biggy one; it is 90cm square (36 " square) canvas, so it may not be too big as a painting in general, but it is big enough for me since I have not tried this size for a few years.

I love to do studio work especially in spring and autumn;
With windows opened, I devote myself to paint, listening radio ( I recently listen radio programs from my home town Osaka voluntarily uploaded on internet!), sipping coffee...
It is complete joy of painting! What more could I ask for?
But, I still have a lot of ask for. Hahaha

いえ、望むことはまだまだ沢山あります(^^);

Going to Deep North

I took wedding anniversary trip to Tohoku (north eastern Japan) with my husband.
I think that Tohoku is world of mistery for those who was born in western Japan.
It really was wonder land for me!

We especially enjoyed Gono Line which runs along the coastal line of Aomori through Akita to feel that we were on roller coaster.

Prime Coating

Spent all day for applying prime coat on new canvases.
I use Matsuda's CANSOL for that purpose;
Although gesso is waterbased and tend to lose its volume when the water in it evaporates, I heard that CANSOL is oilbased made from titanium oxide dissolved with linceed oil and petrol.
Just right for oil painting!

Only problem for it is of the smell.. Very painty.

I should not have done this job at this time of the year;
It is hey fever season! I cannot open the studio window and the room is filled with the smell of all paints!

Filing Tax Return

In Japan, it is time for annual tax return.
Some people may think that artists never keep books and record, but we do.
Actually being an artist is just self employed business, so we do all administrative duties that every sole proprietorship should do.

Help!

I have already done with inventories; canvas, brushes, paints, frames, works in progress, etc.
However I am very slow learning accounting and writing all these documents gives me headache every year :-( .
A plus B minus C should be... No, it shouldn't be... Oh, I hate it.

A+B-Cは。。。。

Cerebrating Birthday, Starting New Painting

Baked a pumpkin pudding for my husband birthday.
This is the most favorite dessert of him!
I used to bake cakes, pies, and cookies very often for the first few years of marriage, but not anymore, since we both were putting on weight... ;-)
Anyway, this is his birthday, so some treat for him.
yummy??
I always try not let my housework eat into my studio hours , so I started cooking as early as 7:00 this morning (!) right after my husband headed off to work.
Getting in time at 9:00 AM, started studio work.
Listening internet radio I come to know recently, I just continued to paint until lunch break.

Snowy Day

The heaviest snowfall in the last 7 years in Tokyo metropolitan area!

Half melted snow before noon

I was locked in yesterday (which actually became good excuse to spend a lazy day, though...), but need to go to my gallery today for delivering commissioned work.
So I got into my closet and found my old snow boots I bought for ski 10 years ago!

Long time no see.
How nice! :-))) It is very comfortable to walk on icy streets holding a big package of paiting under my arm.
My little idea. Do you know that a piece of bubble wrap placing in the shoes keeps your feet very warm? Nobody will know that you are standing on a packing material, but it really works on a cold day. Just try!

Looking for a style

My new challenge of 2013 is to paint ripples of water.
This isn't a easy task, but as many artists have done it successfully, I will try it out anyway.

work in progress

Water has been one of the most interesting painting theme for me, but have never painted so far. So this is my first time to paint water.
So far, it got off OK, but a bit too much of impressionistic taste and color.
Although I like impressionist paintings, I want to create my own style as I did when developing drop painting series.
Sometimes it takes a few years to develop a style, sometimes months. So please warmly watch the growth of this new theme of my painting :-)

Final Update of the Year

Today was supposed to be my last working day of the year, but the paint on the working canvas is not dried yet, which means I have to wait until tomorrow.
So I decided to update my last blog of this year.

Semishigure (Chorus of Cicadas)
24" x 31 1/2" (61cm x 80cm)

Seseragi (Murmuring Brook)
24" x 31 1/2" (61cm x 80cm)

As I always do when creating a painting, I took pictures of natural scenes which later become sources of my inspiration.
Images of these paintings are derived from landscapes in summer; Sun moves so high, everything is lush green, hot and sweaty but quiet afternoon in summer.
At times like that, cicadas suddenly start to sing, and a bleeze gently blows through on a brook which carries cold water.

I gave them Japanese title, because I wanted to keep subtle feeling of which the words of "Semishigure" or "Seseragi" hold; Small but a joyful discover in nature.

With best wishes for a happy new year!

Relaxing time with "Les Misérables"

Finally ( i should say so?), bought a whole series of "Les Misérables" ! (Japanese version, no doubt )(^ ^)
I also bought a expository book entitled "106 stories of Les Misérable"by Shigeru Kashima; It has a lots of beautiful illustrations by wood engraving, so makes me much easier to understand the whole story as well as the social landscape and religeous views of France at that time.
Probably I would not read through without this text. Wonderful book!

inside of expository book

As with many foreign literature, "Les Misérables" start with long introductionary part which sometimes seems nothing to do with the main story; I am now reading the life of a catholic priest who later helped the main character Jean Valjean, although his name has not even been mentioned yet.
Still far to go, but I am planning to read all of them during holiday season.

In addition, I will go to the movie "Les Misérables" with my husband tomorrow. Already reserved the best seats in the theather. Sounds too much? Maybe, but this is my fad in this winter.

New Surroundings

It had been my happy routine for a long time to enjoy a nap after lunch.
It is now but a dream of the past since I moved here; Backyard of my new house is facing to the playground of a junior high school, and therefore, my naptime came to be disturbed by the chimes which ring every fourty minutes to announce the start/end of the classes. Ummmm..

The chimes, however, is useful for me, too; It tells me when to start working and when to take break. It regulates my studio hours.
I also love to hear the students chanting "Fight, Fight" or "Go for it" etc. while PE class or club activities in the playground. Sometimes their practice starts as early as  eight in the morning; It makes me realize that is also the time me to start working or housekeeping (sometimes)  leaving PC.
Although some artists hate to be tied down to clock, I like this way of working a little more than a little which my new environment affords me.  At least, it prevent me to become lazy.
Sorry for my poor English, as always.(^^)

New Studio

It is over two months since I posted last blog here.
Spending most of my time for packing/ repacking for moving, finally settled in my new home and studio!

 I feel very happy with this new studio; It is much more spacious than the old one, very clean and neat, equipted with new air conditioner, and;

 has a big storage room!!!
Inspiring room for creating artwork, don't you think so?
